Tawaf Meaning

Tawaf is one of the most important rites of Umrah and Hajj that refers to the anti-clockwise circling or walking around the Holy Kaaba. The term ‘Tawaf’ means ‘to encircle or walk around something. It is one of the most important rituals of both Hajj and Umrah, without which any pilgrimage either greater or miner would be incomplete. When performing Tawaf, pilgrims recite Takbir and various other prayers based on the Prophet’s Sunnah.

Can you do Tawaf without Umrah?

Although pilgrims do Tawaf during Umrah and Hajj, you may also be done Tawaf without Umrah. Tawaf done without Umrah is called Nafl Tawaf. 

Nafl Tawaf is a type of Tawaf. Performing Nafl Tawaf is a Nafl act that can be performed anytime without wearing Ihram. Like Nafl Salah, this type of Tawaf is voluntary and anyone can do it as often as they like. While staying in Makkah for some reason, you should make the most of your free time by attending Nafl Tawaf. Normally, people perform this type of Tawaf whenever they want in Masjid al-Haram.

Once the Nafl Tawaf is complete and Salah al-Tawaf’s two Rakats are done, go to Zamzam’s well to get Zamzam Water. 

How many times can you do Tawaf? 

After seven rounds around the Kaaba, you have made one Tawaf. Thus, Tawaf can be done as much as one pleases, but for every Nafl Tawaf, he must do Tawaf’s Niyat, dressed in normal clothes, or on behalf of any person, living or dead. After doing Nafl Tawaf, you don’t need to go to Sa’i. But performing Umrah Tawaf, you must be in Ihram and go to Sai to complete the Umrah.  

Tips: The Saudi government has already clarified that the age restriction has been lifted. Therefore, a family of children below 5 years of age and senior citizens above 60 years of age can perform Umrah without any hindrance. This relaxation in age indicates that Muslims can avail of Family Umrah packages without any hesitation. 

Rules for Tawaf:

  1. You must be in the state of wudu during Tawaf.
  2. It is also important to perform Tawaf Niyat.
  3. Pilgrims must start the Tawaf from the Black Stone.
  4. A pilgrim must complete a circumduction of the sacred Holy Kaaba anticlockwise seven times.
  5. Pilgrims are required to perform Vitr prayer during Tawaf. 
  6. Once the Vitr prayer is performed, the pilgrim should return to the Tawaf to perform.
  7. Pilgrims try to kiss the black stone. If this is not possible due to crowds, you can touch the stone and kiss your hand to receive the blessing. Additionally, if you can’t reach the stone, you can point to the black stone and say “Allahu Akbar”.

Best time for Tawaf:

There is no perfect time given for Tawaf, but there are some recommended times that allow you to complete Tawaf in peace. This is specifically around sunrise, just after the Fajr Prayer. The heat is bearable at this time, and Mataaf is relatively uncrowded, especially if you are with the elderly or children.
